Elevate your Print with Premium Finishes

20th April, 2023

From beautifully embossed mailings, through to digitally foiled personalised certificates and soft touch laminated brochures with raised spot UV, well considered premium print finishes can elevate your key messages and take your communication to the next level.

In this month’s blog, we’re looking at when you may want to consider upgrading to a premium print finish, alongside some of the finish options that are available.

Your print quality should be reflective of your business or the occasion, so you need to consider the first impressions that you’re wanting to generate and the likely assumptions of the recipient.  A value offering with premium collateral can potentially cause a disconnect with the consumer, leading to confusion. Vice versa, low-cost print for a premium product or service can do the same.

These are just some of the reasons that you may want to consider premium print finishes for your next project:-

  • To reflect the premium quality of your brand
  • To reward and recognise key customers / employees
  • To target a new audience and generate positive first impressions
  • To celebrate / communicate a special event or anniversary
  • To stand out from your competitors

With statistics estimating that as many as 72% of people judge a business by their business card, it may be worth looking at all of your print collateral from the ground up and making decisions based on your audience, your budget and the project expectations.

Listed below are just some of the examples of premium finishes that we can offer at Rethink:

Soft Touch Lamination

Exuding quality, soft touch laminate gives a smooth velvety finish. Ideal for digital or litho printed brochures, menus and product packaging, its tactile nature ensures that it will stand out amongst the crowd. Soft touch lamination can be elevated even further with the use of metallic spot colour.  If you’re looking to reduce your environmental impact we can explore recyclable options.

Spot Colour

Spot colours offer a greater colour spectrum than traditional CMYK.  If you’re looking to lift your marketing material with vibrant colours or metallic tones or want your logo to pop off the page, spot colour is the perfect way to do this.

Interflora used soft touch lamination and metallic gold spot colour to enhance the quality of their quarterly publication, Mercury Magazine.

Foil Blocking

With its roots firmly set back in ancient Egypt, foil blocking has long been used as a way to elevate and decorate paper-based communication.  The foil used has evolved from being pure gold to more cost-effective man-made metallic solutions. However, the concept is the same, using heated metal stamps to apply metallic foil to the print surface.  This method is ideal for highlighting logos or graphics and allowing light colours to be applied to dark backgrounds, leaving a distinctive debossed and textured appearance. For lower budget or shorter run projects, digital foiling options are also available.

Foil blocking is one method in particular that offers striking results but it can also be recyclable and compostable when used on its own or alongside a recyclable lamination technique.

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) used matt lamination and foil blocking to elevate their 40th anniversary communication.

Spot Gloss UV Varnish

Spot gloss is one of the most popular ways to add extra visual interest to printed products, enhancing the overall quality, appearance and texture.  Spot UV uses polymer resin and ultraviolet light to add extra shine and emphasis to selected words, images or logos, making them pop on the page.

Many of the varnishes used for spot UV printing are free of harmful chemicals, making them suitable for use on recyclable materials.

The Cairds Estate Agents used a spot gloss UV varnish over matt lamination to elevate their customer brochures.

Scodix Spot UV

As well as considering how print looks, we’re passionate about how it feels for the end user.  Scodix raised spot UV lifts the graphics off the page, creating a beautifully tactile finish.

Norman Broadbent used Scodix Spot UV to make their company name pop on their business cards

Die Cutting

Whether you’re looking to standout with a uniquely shaped direct marketing piece or you’re searching for perfect packaging, die cutting could be the ideal solution.  Die-cutting is more commonly used when the shape of a design goes beyond straight lines and right-angled corners.

Spaceway designed a freestanding die-cut direct mail piece to encourage their audience to reconfigure their existing premises instead of moving.

From embossing, debossing and white ink printing, through to antimicrobial coatings for medically vulnerable locations, we work with our customers to understand the project objectives, budget expectations and the campaign audience to make print finish recommendations.
